The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) is formally renamed Ministry of Education (MoE) by a government gazette notification issued on 14 August. The decision to change the name was taken at the meeting of the Union Cabinet on July 29, 2020. The MHRD/MoE is led at union level by Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and at the state level by Sanjay Dhotre.
The notice of the gazette also calls for amendments to the Government of India (Business Allocation) Rules, 1961, regarding the change in the ministry name.
The name change was authorized the same day Union Cabinet took up the new National Education Policy 2020. The change had been suggested in the proposal itself. A few days later, on 4 August, the name was modified on the website of the Ministry of Human Resource Development as well as the social media accounts of the Minister of Education, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank.
